What is alt text?
It’s text that is used to describe an online image. There should be alt text to describe images that are online (WCAG 2.0, Success Criterion 1.1.1).
What are the benefits? Take a look at this article in the Tink Tank blog …”A good alt text can conjure up wonderfully stimulating mental images.” … written by someone who has lost her sight.

BS8878 Web Accessibility - Code of practice
