• Groups

Students can be divided into groups for separate forums and assessments. You can also send emails to a group.

    THE BASICS

The following videos give information to help you decide how you can use groups.

The accompanying handout contains transcripts and some associated images.

Do you need to use groups at all?

If you have diverse interests in your module/course and it doesn’t matter if others can see the resources that you add, then you may consider careful use of Topic Summaries and Labels.

If you just have a small number of students to give resources, it may be easier to email the appropriate resource instead.

For example, Organising groups: letting groups focus on different topics (visible to others), illustrated one way of organising a module:

    Groups in Activities

You don’t need to use groupings if you want to create Forums for your groups. You can create a single Forum and either enable groups to see the other groups’ version of the Forum or have a private Forum.

The video Setting Groups for activities shows you how:

Wiki are Activities. So you don’t need to use grouping, just groups, and set up a single wiki for the groups. The video Assigning group wiki also talks about the different types of wiki and shows where you can find more information to help you decide the type of wiki to use:

    Groups and Groupings in Moodle

A brief introduction. Use groupings if you need to make sure that only certain members of your module/course can access your Resources and not others.

Put your students into groups, assign groups to grouping and then assign the appropriate Resource to a grouping.

Note: You may not need to use groupings… see above.

    Groupings - an example

There are some circumstances under which you should use groupings in Moodle. This video shows how you can set up Moodle groupings using, as an example, students who need to retake a module. (Transcript.)
