Web Conference
The University has a web conferencing service that is free to use and uses the same equipment that you would use for Skype, i.e. microphone, speakers and an optional web cam. As the name implies it is designed for more than one to one conventions and can be used for meetings and discussions between many people. One course being run by HLS delivered its lectures using it to between 10 and 20 students, the students were scattered all over the UK, including Ireland. The e-Learning Unit has also help set up conferences with Trinidad, with a group of lectures here delivering to a room of 20+ people.
To join a conference you need to download a small activeX control and once that is installed you are ready to join the conference. There is a link to a test conference in the side bar of this page under Web Conference, Support for Users on LIW. Feel free to click it and see.
To get a conference you can register with CUBA and set your self up a blog, then in the presentation screen simply drag the “My Cafe” widget on to the side bar.
The conference software is supplied by WiredRed and there is a demo of the software on their site.
