Skype
Skype is free software and allows you to make free calls to other Skype users. It requires a minimum of a microphone and speakers, a head set with mic would do nicely. It is enhanced with a web cam as video calls can then be made giving a more personal touch to the call, again these are free. International calls from Skype user to Skype user is also free so a good way of keeping in touch if you travel.
The fact that you have to become a Skype user is not a real problem as it is free and the benefits from using Skype are good.
Downside, your contacts reside on the computer you are using, shame they are not MSN contacts.
The other person needs to be by their computer to receive the call, unless you are using Skype to call the University, in which case they need to be by their phone. However, if the person is one of your contacts you can see their current status, so know if they are able to receive calls.
If you start using Skype you would probably like it.
Here is a of video about Skype.
That was not me, I just found him on You Tube.

So if I add any university number to Skype and call it, it’s automatically routed through to that number - or do I first need to call a different number?
You add the Coventry Skype user to your contacts and call them, you will then be asked to enter the extension your want.
