My experience of LIW so far is good - the technology makes most things convenient and easy to do but I am having 1 difficulty and have 1 issue that I would like to raise:

    1. Difficulty - When logged onto the remote desktop, if I leave it 15 minutes, it then does not allow me to log back on - I have to reboot my laptop completely. I have been told it should let me log straight back on …

    2. Printing not convenient - to print in the LIW room, I have to save work to a usb and take it over to a PC, boot it up and open my files to print - is there no way something more convenient could be set up??

    Thanks,
    Terri

    Terri,

I never have this problem when I login remotely from home but I was logged in remotely on campus today and I was regularly logged out. It is really annoying.

And I agree about the printer in WM404 today. It would be much easier if there was a wireless printer in the room.

A few interesting things to note:

    1. My Orange smart phone isn’t smart enough (to work in my village!) - although I have my office phone forwarded to it, I only get messages when I leave the house…

    2. Laptop - not enough outlet to plug in keyboard, printer, mouse, dongle all at once. So if oyu set up your little work station as I have done, you have to plu and unplug things as you need it - not good.

    3. I was made to feel rather like a weirdo the other day - for dragging my trolly around - the person was ‘uncomfortable’ and kept asking if I wanted to leave it in her office while we went for coffee! - I admit it is not attractive and I feel a little silly but hey, it saves my back…

    4. Think we need to PLAN how to inform students about LIW and ensure they do not burden our colleagues (as I increasingly hear people are worried about) - I don’t see it being a problem but students do need to be clear on how to communicate with us and that other lecturers should not be approach concerning issues that we are responsible for.

Still happy though - about LIW, not happy about future (Sept) parking arrangements.

    Terri,

I know that public transport isn’t an option for you but I am going to be using the bus from September; that’s one less person fighting you for spaces!

Using the remote desktop with the dongle connection has proved unbearably slow and sometimes make getting anything done just impossible.

And in response to Tina using the bus - don’t worry as with the price of fuel and parking I won’t be able to afford to come in!

    Terri,

With regards to your laptop outlets issue - I have purchased a wireless keyboard and mouse pack which the uses just one USB outlet for both items. You can then use the other two for dongla and pinter respectively.

With regard to students, we are hoping to hold a focus group to get feedback from students. We are also discussing a process for informing students as you have suggested.

    Thanks for your inputs guys!

    LIW in the snow

It’s just occurred to me: no traffic jams, no slippery roads to negotiate out of the village and into the car park…
No leaving early from work, no missed appointments. Emails arrive as usual. The phone rings…
Snow? No problem. Life and work continue as normal in LIW-land!

LIW means the end of snow days, so while other people can\’t get into work and relax going sledging and having snow ball fights you can carry on working.
