These materials cover a range of topics, from basic introductory information about lecture capture to some techincal support information. One or two of these resources are specific to Coventry University but most have been written to support universal adoption.
Introductory and Basics |
|
| The following documents serve as broad summaries of several topics around lecture capture. They are useful in developing a general understanding of the technology, its potential and its implementation. | |

What About… benefits to institutions? - Adopting lecture capture can be a strategic step by institutions. There are a number of reasons why an institution would implement the technology, and it may benefit in several ways. What About… benefits to students? - A summary of lecture capture’s benefits to students beyond use as a revision tool. What About… benefits to tutors? - For many tutors, the benefits that students get from captured lectures is enough reason to use the technology. However many tutors see a number of practical advantages for themselves as well. What About… different methods of lecture capture? - Which method you choose should depend on your purposes in capturing it and the technical limitations of the software. What About… web lecture tools? - Web lecture tools are one possibility when it comes to lecture capture. These are especially useful for recording online learning lecture sessions, guest lectures from overseas, and other distance learning situations. |
Recording and Delivery |
|
| These documents support various aspects of the actual recording of a lecture capture, including general advice, delivery tips, and increasing the usability of your captures. | |

Common Delivery Mistakes - Increasing your recording’s review value - Issues with room installations and delivery - Lecture Capture Tips and Advice - Template slide - Notice for Students - A template powerpoint slide which contains a notice for students that a lecture is being recorded. Template slides - Unrecorded Activity - A set of template slides which can be used in a captured lecture to indicate when an unrecorded activity is taking place - group work, break, etc. This increases the reviewability of a recording. |

Websites offering free, stock, or public domain images or music - There are a number of websites which have free, stock or public domain images and audio. Most of them ask only for attribution of photographer, performer or source. What About… capturing student interaction? - One of the problems lecturers may face when recording their lectures is that the system can generally only capture what the lecturer says and does. What About… capturing the whiteboard? - Many lecturers regularly use whiteboards (or similar objects). This document suggests some adaptations which could be made to capture things which normally are lost in the recording. What About… copyright in recorded media? - By recording a lecture, content within is digitized into a different format and redistributed, which is generally not permitted under fair use regardless of educational purpose. What About… editing your recordings? - Some lecturers may wish to edit their captured lectures, and there are many reasons for doing so. What About… delivery tips? - For some, the idea of being recorded is a bit off-putting (perhaps even a little scary). Being armed with some preparation and practice can help a lot. What About… increasing your recording’s review value? - While the focus of most captured lectures is to be a revision resource for students, there are a few things a lecturer can do with their PowerPoints to make the recording more useful during review. What About… notifying your students? - Depending on the room installation, most of the time students will not be captured on the video or audio. It is fair to warn students of the recording in case they want to decline demonstrations, move elsewhere in the room, etc. What About… making a personal capture? - This document gives some guidance as to planning, suitability, and delivery tips for using personal capture. What About… preparing for your session? - We’ve come up with a short checklist of things to keep in mind when planning to do a recorded lecture using a room installation system. What About… recording lectures for re-use? - Although the main use of captured lectures to date is to provide recordings which students can use to aid revision, many lecturers see the use in using recordings multiple times, or even recording specifically to create reusable resources. |
Technical |
|
| These are resources focused on a more specific technology, or cover topics around technical/setup aspects of doing a captured lecture. These may be useful to practitioners but are aimed mainly at technical or A/V support staff. | |
