Hi John, I run a freeware website from which I distribute games which I have written. I am fully sighted but in addition to my sighted games I have also written 14 blind accessible games using Microsoft SAPI as a synthesized voice. These have proved very popular and I am at the moment, due to popular request, writing a Blind Gamers Crossword Puzzle game which will allow blind and vision impaired players to solve crosswords downloaded from the Internet. If you want more information on this, please feel free to contact me. I am a retired programmer, writing games for fun and not for profit.

Thank you John. I think your idea of presenting crosswords without a grid, or rather, so that the grid does not have to be seen, is brilliant! One thought. Very occasionally when trying to crack a tough clue, you might look to see how possible letter affect other solutions. If your possible solution would lead to Z-X-Q (!) it's probably not the right answer!
John. Your idea is a winner.

Can you add some of the mysqldump output you are operating on with this script? I thought by default mysqldump puts each insert on its own line. (The -e option causes it to run them all ino one line).

We had a successful test with sloodle today. A little fiddle in Second Life, the variables we were setting in a notecard were not being passed over to the various other parts of the sloodle bundle (sorry don't know official name).

Once we has the variables hard coded the test worked a treat, Joff chatted to me from in side SL, while I sat in moodle. :)

Joff was prompted to visit and log into the moodle site when getting close to the sloodle bundle. After he had done this the sloodle bundle remembered him and he didn't need the browser window open any more. It would nice to see Joff try this from another machine, if you have to log in every time then why chat in SL and moodle, why not just one or the other. I am pretty sure it will remember him.

There were several other options that could be used in sloodle, including enrolment and test chair. Unfortunately we did not have time to investigate these much furter but I saw enough to say that they would be look at.

After seeing the demo I am pretty sure that something could be done along the same lines with CUOnline. The old grey matter just needs time to stew on it.

I have three objections to this. The default cohort may be in use as well as an alternative for, say, part-time students doing evening study. We would have to adopt the same procedure for undergraduate courses as we do for M-level courses i.e. not using the default unless that is the only instance. That would mean recohorting (a new word!) a lot more students which might not be well received in the undergraduate offices.

My second objection is that we tried something similar once before and it didn't work. I don't know why but it seemed to confuse staff and students. Most staff didn't bother with any training sessions of course and so didn't know what to expect - the admin staff too were not kept in the picture so when students approached them they didn't know why the student was getting a strange 'Go Away!' message.

And my third point is simply to ask who is going to put these messages up. Since most staff don't know how the system works they don't know that they are supposed to be 'disabling' the default section with a message. In fact it is better to remove staff completely because otherwise they will put content in the wrong place. I am reluctant to make myself a designer on sections - I see all module design as the role of the module leader.
