Theme 4 should compare the use of pozzolans (existing and previously un-used materials) with other CO2 reduction strategies. In particular, this should involve mass-balance, energy-balance and cost-benefit analyses. For example:

• How is the CO2 mass balance influenced by changes in operating conditions?
• Can thermodynamic / kinetic modelling predict the effect of changing the raw meal composition?
• Can we model the fate of trace elements partitioned between gas and solid phases?
• What is the consequence of changing fuel composition and combustion conditions
