The room lighting in the computer lab was not suitable for lecture capture. The lights were the latest specification that are designed for computer room. They send the light straight down and not sideways to reduce screen reflections. The result is that their is little light directed at the presenters face. This was made more pronounced by the fact that the background was white. The automatic exposure on the video camera cused the presenters face to be too dark to see any features. After experimenting by hanging variously coloured sheets behind the presenter it was decided to paint the background wall a mid blue colour. This has solved the problem.

Denise, Amanda, Imran and I visited the Steering Group of the ReCap project at Newcastle university on 6th March. This was a very useful experience for us all, with a number of reflection points to take away. Some of the key things that emerged:

* clear vision of their ‘utility’ model of lecture capture; Coventry/ELTAC will need to decide where on the spectrum we fit/wish to develop as there are pros and cons in different models

* student experience emerging quite clearly; we were given access to some still unpublished survey data indicating the uses of and values attributed to lecture capture; this is really important because most of what we are relying on has been generated in an Australian context.

* they did not do any staff development or produce documentation for staff; hence they are interested in what we are doing; we had hoped to appropriate some useful resources but it looks as though it will be the other way round…

* they are less concerned with the copyright problematics than we are; this may be because of their ‘utility’ model - they are not looking at repository storage and reuse as a strategy.

we have completed another staff development workshop (12th March). This session contained some project members and CSHE staff. Although condensed into a half-day we received positive feedback, despite some technical problems!!

Our strategy now is to run only programme or team workshops as we feel this works better; it also helps to focus on some o f the issues which turn out not to be individual decisions tutors can take but more programmatic policy decisions and we can focus activity around this kind of discussion and decision-planning. Our next workshop will be for the Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) team in May. We have also been doing a few one-to-one sessions for individuals who cannot fit into a timetabled session.

Charles Shields, Head of E-Learning at Loughborough, heard about our project through mutual contacts at Derby who were at the Echo360 Users conference and contacted me for a visit. On Monday 16th March Andy Syson and I met with him to outline our experiences to date and discuss a number of issues, including staff acceptance and embedding strategies. We though the capture of external speakers and inaugural lectures might be appealing in a research-oriented culture. We also put him in touch with Clive to mentor some of the technical decisions they may wish to consult on. There may be some opportunities for collaboration further down the line.

Next workshop: 12th March 2009

Specific feedback on forms:

· Technicians need to work closely with academics regarding room set up

· Capture shouldn’t be used without lecturer’s agreement

· Suggest an expiry date agreed for captures that will be re-used

· Request clarity on capture of (permitted) copyright materials used in the lecture

· Would like to be able to edit captures (this is possible)

· Request roving camera

· Would like opportunities to practice in the classroom (Andy’s ‘free timetable slots’ would answer this)

Informal feedback from discussions:

· Concern about the restrictions/possible restrictions which would impact normal lecturing style. These include having to stand still; not using whiteboard/video/flip chart; limitations in using discussion or other activity within lecture.

· Feeling that the above may be regressive from t&l point of view and the lecturer as presenter rather than teacher is reinforced.

· Confusion about the formal ‘ownership’ of the captured lecture and IPR of the lecturer.

· Feeling that technology-led; need earlier consultation with academic staff to design rooms & make equipment decisions etc. although recognising there are technical and logistical limitations.
