There was an interesting discussion in the meeting about the IPR issues, especially since these lectures will be uploaded to CURVE and will need rights assigned. I wonder if we need a little seminar on this led by a specialist (for example BUFVC do workshops on multi-media copyright)? This would be an important area to model as an institutional exemplar and would inform the policy package.

Sorry but my reponse would be for the staff yes we do, a generalised one would be sufficient at this point (I can provide a working example when back at base) it's far more difficult to go back and collect consent after the fact and we don't know whose examples we may wish to refer to in publications for example. We may be able to use something that the uni already uses for the students for example is there a photo consent form in existence? And of course we would have to let them know that they may be visible if they sit near the front.
I think that on another issue this also raises the consent issue for the use of the videoed material aside from the lecturer who has requested capture. Who has access to it once stored and how long will it be stored (there are data protection issues here aren't there?)?
We may wish to be light touch but that may leave us and participants open and should really be sorted out now.
Just some thoughts.

An interesting question which we need to follow up. My own feeling is that the answer is probably "no" but that students need to know that lectures are being captured. If they don't want to be seen they should avoid sitting at the front! However it is not possible to generalise and it may depend on who is going to be able to see the lecture in the future. In the future we may end up changing general regualtions so that students sign up at that point. At the moment we are presuming consent from lecturers since they are informed volunteers at this stage.

Hi all

Do we need to produce consent forms for staff and students? Although generally the students are not seen during the video recording process, they may be sitting within range of the podium mic especially if they are sat near the podium around the front row.

Thanks

I am keen to find out what people's motives are for recording lectures. I would like to capture the reasons and expectations of those who volunteer to particpate, and later use these as a basis for evaluations (students and staff) and expressions of 'good practice'. How staff approach the task of lecture recording and how they conceptualise it must vary, depending on who they think is their audience and how that audience is meant to benefit.
