For a long time Cuba has had various embargoes against them, this has made the people 
very resourceful at re purposing various materials. A prime example of this is their cars or maquinas, where the body panels may be fabricated from old oil drums, engines from different cars are made to fit the body shell of another car. That is in part the idea behind CUBA. Taking a range of products, mostly freely available, and then combining them to form a tool that should help academics work and communicate.
The main body of CUBA is WordPress mu, an open source blogging tool, on to this body work we have crafted and welded a series of tools such as web conferencing, wikis, an image gallery and more. We have left it so that you can also bolt on bits yourself, this is done by having the ability to pull content from else where and having it appear that it is in CUBA, for examples of this please visit the Owners Hand Book, this is where you will be taught how to run your maquinas or blog.
To keep in theme you should think of CUBA as an island with a series of interconnecting roads on which there are various maquinas. Each maquinas can be edited or pimped to an individuals tastes.
